Taj Vaccarella

In nature, we are immersed in phenomena and patterning and movement. With my abstract painting, I intend to create an experience for the viewer similar to a spontaneous happening in nature. The effect is hallucinogenic and interactive. I study and explore the movements of the various elements and approach these paintings like a gardener. I build the size and shape of the garden and, with a general color scheme in mind, sow the "seeds" of color into the soil or underpainting. Then, I water and train and trim as necessary until the canvas is thriving and able to live on its own. My hope is that my work will prompt other people to see and appreciate the dramatic and subtle phenomena which surrounds us.

Born in the Catskill mountains of New York, Taj Vaccarella has been painting and drawing since age three. His work spans a wide range of subject matter, including portraits, seasonal landscapes, and large vivid abstracts. As an art major at St. Mary's College of Maryland, he was awarded the senior purchase for a piece which now belongs to the school's collection. Taj studied sculpture and anatomy in the Loire Valley in France and is self taught in his oil technique. Deciding at age sixteen that painting would be his livelihood, Taj has been selling and exhibiting ever since. His paintings live in private and public collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Major stylistic influences include Gustav Klimt, Jean Dubuffet, Monet, Van Gogh and many of the brush painters and calligraphers of Japan and China.
